LET US focus on the moment before us. Science tells us our focal point is the size of a quarter. Of course we see the peripheral but that’s not in complete focus. This communion service is our focal point. The rest of our service today is in our peripheral vision. That’s not to say that our prayers, singing, and teaching are not important because they are.

I am conflicted over the Lord’s supper. I don’t know whether I cry for sadness.  or I cry for happiness.  Both are involved with my sin and my salvation.   Preaching in the Temple, Peter tells the people that God had lifted up His son, Jesus, to turn the people from their sinful ways—

Ye are the children of the prophets, and of the covenant which God made with our fathers . . .  Unto you first God, having raised up his Son Jesus, sent him to bless you, in turning away every one of you from his iniquities —Acts 3: 25, 26

In the Lord’s supper, we are to remember that God lifted His son up to the cross, lifted him from the tomb, and lifted him to heaven to sit at the right hand of God. In our humility, God will likewise lift us up—

Humble yourselves in the sight of the Lord, and he shall lift you up—James 4:10

Remember, the story of the Lord’s supper is about Jesus, but the message is about us.
